November 3rd, 2008 - Fauré's Requiem

This year, the Cathedral Boys' and Adult Choirs will sing the famous musical setting of the Requiem Mass by Gabriel Fauré. This takes place at 5.30pm on All Souls Day, Monday 3rd November. It will be sung as part of the liturgy of the evening mass.

The treble solo in the hauntingly beautiful Pie Jesu will be sung by a chorister in the boys' choir. The liturgy will also include the Introit, Kyrie, Sanctus, Agnus Dei and In Paradisum.

The cathedral choirs sing many of Fauré's other mass settings, including the seldom performed Messe des pêcheurs de Villerville, a joint work by Fauré and André Messager.

The first version of the Requiem was completed in 1887, and underwent various revisions and re-orchestrations until the final version of 1900. The Requiem was also performed at Fauré's own funeral.

September 22nd,2008- Cathedral Concerts 2008/2009

Leeds Cathedral is the magnificent setting for a series of free concerts that bring a flavour of choir, classical music and swing to the city centre. 

2008/2009 marks the second full season for the new concert programme.

September 26th,2008- Diocese of Leeds Youth Choir

January 2009 will see the creation of the Diocese of Leeds Youth Choir, for young people aged 15 to 21.  Membership will be opened to pupils in schools across the Diocese.  The choir will sing a mixture of sacred and secular music, performing in West Yorkshire and beyond.  more >>

Applications are now invited for Choral Scholarships from students at Leeds and Huddersfield Universities and Leeds College of Music. Excellent sight reading skills and some experience of choral singing are essential for those considering making an application.

September 8th,2008- New Choral Directors
