Yorkshire Schools Choir                       of the Year Competition 2006

Following on from their runners-up spot in 2005, this year the choir of Yorkshire Martyrs Catholic College went one better, winning the coveted title of Yorkshire Schools Choir of the Year 2006.  Compere Guy Harris, presenter of the breakfast show on Real Radio,  described Yorkshire Martyrs singing as 'fun, enthusiastic and performed with their own unique style.'

Conducted by BYC director Chris McElroy, YM sang two contrasting songs in the final.   The judges attention however was definitely drawn the second song 'Sheep, Sheep, Sheep.'  Written by Andy Murray, this song describes the nativity story from the point a view of two shepherds and their sheep!

However, the BYC success story did not rest entirely with Yorkshire Martyrs, as both St. Josephs College and Holy Family were also finalists and commended by the judges.  In all over 80 children from Bradford Catholic schools took part in this years finals.

In accepting the £1000 winning prize of the competition, held in the Light shopping centre in Leeds, Yorkshire Martyrs Headteacher John Tat said how proud he was of his pupils, and how delighted he was with their achievements.  The pupils were doubly delighted with their success when the realised that they had each won cinema and restaurant tickets!

At the invitation of The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Bradford, Councillor Choudhary Rangzeb and Mrs Zahida Rangzeb, the choir attended City Hall later in the week to perform to staff and councillors a selection of their seasonal repertoire.  Click here for a report and pictures from the event.
