The choir very much enjoyed the event as the grand marble staircase of City Hall has a fantastic acoustic.  A highlight of the day was the chance to see some of the important rooms in City Hall, including the Council Chamber itself.

Yorkshire Schools Choir of the Year Finals (report by Kelly Holt)

On Saturday 9th December 2006, three of the BYC Secondary school choirs reached the finals of the Yorkshire Schools Christmas Choir of the Year Competition. Choirs from Holy Family, Yorkshire Martyrs and St Joseph’s attended the event at The Light Shopping Centre in Leeds, to compete against nine other Yorkshire schools for the £1000 prize money to be spent on musical equipment for their school.  The competition was divided into four heats of three schools, with the three BYC schools entered into the second heat, making for an exceptionally tense and exciting round!

As passing shoppers gathered around the competition enclosure, Holy Family looking excited and slightly nervous began with John Rutter's 'Angels Carol', followed by ‘Santa Claus Is Coming To Town’, for which the group of youngsters donned identical Santa hats and danced to a carefully choreographed routine, proving a big hit with judges– including Real Radio’s Guy Harris– and the crowds of shoppers alike.

Next to perform were St Joseph’s, whose beautiful rendition of ‘Mary Had a Baby’ brought shoppers to a standstill in the mall’s courtyard. The only one of the three choirs to feature sixth form students, St Joseph’s made good use of their older performers with a duet by Sarah Bolland & Laura Groves in ‘Three Kings came to Bethlehem Town.’

Though both schools performed exceptionally well, in the end it was Yorkshire Martyrs who went through to the next round. The choir of thirty youngsters aged 11-14 sang a jazzy arrangement of ‘Go Tell It On the Mountain’ for their first song, which included a touching solo by Year Nine student Chanelle Schofield. Their second song, ‘Frosty the Snowman’ was equally well performed and was very well received by the judges. After a tense wait it was announced that Yorkshire Martyrs would be going through to the final round.

In the final round the choir, who had sung together for just four months and were the youngest to progress to the final round, faced Intake High School, of Leeds, Harrogate Ladies College and Bootham School of York to battle it out for the prize money and prestigious title of Yorkshire Christmas Choir of the Year.

The overall winners of the competition were Intake HS, with YM awarded the runners-up spot! Choir director Mr. McElroy was delighted with all the BYC choirs, and hopes that one of them can take the title next year!
